Our Legacy
Rooted in History
Marina del Rey Middle School opened its doors on September 12, 1960. The campus was designed by acclaimed African American architect Paul R. Williams, who overcame racial barriers to become a celebrated figure in Hollywood and civic architecture.
Our school is located on 21 acres of land that was once agricultural and riparian, situated near the Marina and adjacent to La Ballona Creek, which was historically part of Rancho La Ballona. This setting reflects both the natural heritage and evolving landscape of West Los Angeles.
Our name, Marina del Rey is Spanish for “Harbor of the King” which celebrates the geography of our community and our multicultural identity.
Feeder elementary schools include Braddock Drive, Grand View, Playa del Rey, Short Avenue, and Stoner Avenue. The majority of our students continue their academic journey at Venice High School.
